Native American Lifeways and Spirituality

This is an overview talk that addresses some of the practices of Native America coming more into mainstream awareness.
Subjects touched on include Prayer as Commitment, Inipi (sweatlodge),
Language, Medicine Shield, and Medicine Wheel. Learn from a unique worldview that will help
you understand a philosophy that not only creates inner peace and happiness, but has given Indigenes
the ability to withstand the history of the last 500 years.
Date: Friday, September 24, 2010,
7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Tuition: $20

Medicine Shields Workshop

Life brings many challenges, some we meet head on, some we avoid, often to only wish later that we hadn’t. It is possible to understand our patterns well enough to make changes that will improve our lives, such as dismantling procrastination, learning better money skills, using fear, even uncertainty, to our advantage. The Medicine Shield is a tool that can help you understand your life patterns, especially those that work against you. Once you understand the underlying cause of any given behavior, and decide what you do want in your life, you then establish a working relationship with one or more Animal Medicine Helpers. This information is built into a physical shield, which you learn how to use to achieve your goals.
Date: Saturday, September 25, 2010, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Tuition: $75 (includes all materials and 68 page manual)
Class size: Limited to 12 participants

Journey With the Drum

Of the many uses of the hand drum, the journey with the drum is one of the lesser known. To journey with the drum is experiential, but it is not ceremony. We will ask for protection, smudge, and do the Hollow Bone before starting. A single drum in the background sets a slow and easy pace to begin the journey, a few words are spoken, loosely guiding you out of the material world, closer to the veil, where you will then take off on your own. But you will be safe at all times, the drum ensures that.
Date: Monday, September 27, 2010
7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Tuition: $20

Understanding Animals as Medicine Helpers

Native American teachings, traditions, and lifeways can also help us understand the complex relationships between humans and nonhumans. You will learn how to observe and interpret animal behavior, and then extend that into metaphor in order to understand what the deeper meaning, or teaching from the animal is.
Date: Tuesday, September 28, 2010
7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Tuition: $20 (full tuition credit towards the Medicine Wheel Workshop for paid attendance to this lecture)

The Pipe

The Pipe is a sacred tool that is the cornerstone of ceremony. Given to the People so long ago nobody knows for sure, to be the keeper of a pipe for the people is a sobering responsibility. This talk touches on:
· Pipe care
· Kinnick-kinnick, tobacco
· Who can "carry" a Pipe, and what does the term actually refer to
· When is a Pipe used
· How did the Pipe come to the People
· What is a "pipe ceremony"
· What is the symbolism of the Pipe
The purpose of this talk is to educate people so that they will learn to respect the pipe, not seek to own one to "play Indian," to impress friends, or to boost the ego, but to learn how to conduct themselves around the Pipe and Pipe carrier so that they will get the maximum benefit from it.
Date: Wednesday, September 29, 2010
7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Tuition: $20
